(January 18th, 1979 – ): #LeoVaradkar matters in the history of Ireland (and the history of the world) for the multitude of changes he has worked on and the visibility he brings to the next generation. For starters, he is the first half-Indian, first openly gay, and youngest #Taioseach in Ireland’s history. His father was Indian and Hindu, and his mother was Irish and Catholic, though they decided to raise their son in the Catholic faith (he now considers himself non-religious, but finds world religions “fascinating.”)
In his career as a politician, he served within the #LabourParty and #FineGael in Ireland as Minister of Transport, Tourism, and Sport; Minister for Health; and Minister for Social Protection. In 2015, when Ireland was voting by popular referendum on same-sex marriage (the only country to ever legalize same-sex marriage by popular vote), Varadkar came out publicly and was the first Irish minister ever to do so. In 2017, at the age of 38, he became Taioseach of Ireland, the political post of the prime minister and head of government in Ireland. He was, at the time of his election, the fourth openly LGBTQIA world leader. As Taioseach, he worked to improve the lives of all Irish people and many have compared him and his popularity to that of the second Taioseach and third President of Ireland, #EamonDeValera.
In 2020, he served as #Tanaiste and then went back to serving as Taoiseach from 2022 until April of 2024 when he resigned, saying he felt he was no longer the best person for the job.
