Margaret Cho

#MargaretCho (December 5, 1968 – ): A stand-up comedian, actress, fashion designer, author, and singer-songwriter. Frequently her stand-up addresses social and political problems, most notably issues of race and sexuality in America. Born in San Francisco in a Korean family, Cho grew up in the church where her grandfather was a Christian minister. Growing up was difficult, and Cho has said of her childhood, “I was hurt because I was different, and so sharing my experience of being beaten and hated and called fat and queer and foreign and perverse and gluttonous and lazy and filthy and dishonest and yet all the while remaining invisible heals me, and heals others when they hear it – those who are suffering right now.” In the mid-1990s, Cho began doing several stand-up shows at a club next to her parents’ bookstore in San Francisco and later moved on to television specials and even her own TV show, #AllAmericanGirl. Since the show, Cho has expressed regret in some of what the show did to her and in society, most notably in how her producers forced her to lose weight for the role and coached her in being “more Asian” (to play to East Asian stereotypes). She endured, however, and has continued doing stand-up since then, addressing her own experiences with substance abuse, eating disorders, her bisexuality and obsession with gay men, and Asian American stereotypes. In 2019, she started a podcast called #TheMargaretCho, where she features show business guests and original music by #GarrisonStarr. #PrideMonth #LGBTQIA #LGBTQIAPride #Pride🌈 #LegendsOfPride #YouCannotEraseUs
