#RebeccaSugar (July 9, 1987 – ): Born and raised in #SilverSpring, #Maryland, Sugar is an animator, director, screenwriter, producer, and singer/songwriter most well known for being the creator of the TV show #StevenUniverse. Previously she worked as a writer and storyboard artist for #AdventureTime, and earned six Primetime Emmy Award nominations. She identifies as bisexual and non-binary, uses she/her and they/them pronouns, and works to increase LGBT representation in art and children’s entertainment. In her show Steven Universe, she received praise for creating the Gems, leading characters who are non-binary women. Through the characters she has created, she also came more to terms with her own identity, and she hopes that by showing positive examples of LGBTQIA representation in children’s media more children will feel comfortable in their own skin and feel supported for being different from the larger society. Sugar stated she wants to “champion LGBTQIA, all of it, content…in G-Rated, family entertainment. [She wants] to do that forever.” Her work on Steven Universe has also earned her the 2018 Peabody Award for Children’s & Youth Programming and the 2019 GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Kids & Family Program, among other accolades. The show ended after its fifth season but then revived into a movie followed by a limited sequel series which ended with a four-part finale in March 2020. The following month, Sugar narrated a video #LetMyPeopleGo, about the poor living conditions of those detained by #ICE during the #COVID19 pandemic. She continues working on projects and recently stated that she was writing a new Adventure Time movie. #PrideMonth #LGBTQIA #LGBTQIAPride #LegendsOfPride #YouCannotEraseUs
