Bisi Alimi

#BisiAlimi
(January 17, 1975 – ): Alimi is a British-Nigerian LGBTQIA rights activist who was the first Nigerian to come out on television, an act that resulted in the loss of his family and eventually his flight to the UK. While at university, he was outed by a university publication and later almost denied his certificate because university officials felt his morals were unacceptable as an alumnus. He later moved to London and received his Masters in Global Governance and Public Policy, topics which he often speaks to at major public events. During his time in #Nigeria, he worked for community organizations that provided contraception and sexual education to gay men and men who have sex with men there. From there he worked for #AllianceRightsNigeria, where he developed frameworks for better sexual health and HIV/AIDS health services in Nigeria. He used this as a springboard to co-found #TheIndependentProject, which became #TheInitiativeForEqualRights, which works to “protect and promote the human rights of sexual minorities nationally [in Nigeria] and regionally.” For his work and after his public coming out, Alimi has been the target of death threats, which led to him moving to the UK after being granted asylum there in 2008. Along with LGBTQIA and HIV/AIDS activism, Alimi has also protested racism in the UK, where he currently serves as director of the #BisiAlimiFoundation, a non-profit that aspires to create a more inclusive Nigeria where all are treated equally regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
