#StonewallUprising (June 28, 1969 – July 3, 1969): Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, gay bars were consistently busted by police. It was illegal in many place for gay bars to exist, and when the police would raid a bar the lives of #LGBTQ people were put on the line. Oftentimes their names would be published in newspapers and many lost their jobs for the simple “crime” of being who they are. Others were severely beaten by police and had no recourse in seeking justice for this police brutality owing to the shame and bigotry of the day. Many of these bars were run by the Mafia, and if they hadn’t paid off corrupt police officials, then they would be raided. On June 28th, 1969, police raided the #StonewallInn in #GreenwichVillage and the patrons, led largely by #WomenOfColor and #TransWomenOfColor (notably #StormeDeLarverie, #MarshaPJohnson and #SylviaRivera) fought back after having had enough of the mistreatment they suffered at the hands of police and of a homophobic society. This became famously known as the #StonewallUprising or the #StonewallRiots. Over the course of the next six days, LGBTQ activists and “everyday people” fought back against the police with the resounding message that enough was enough. Today, this event is celebrated as the beginning of the Gay Liberation Movement, though it was certainly not the first protest of its kind.#PrideMonth#LGBTQIA#LGBTQIAPride#Pride
