(January 5th, 1989 – ): #JoshuaWhitehead is an Oji-Cree member of the #PeguisFirstNation in Manitoba, who identifies as #TwoSpirit and is known for his writing. His debut collection of poetry, full metal indigiqueer, was nominated for a Lamba Literary Award for Transgender Poetry though he withdrew the work from nomination as this was a misrepresentation of his identity as two-spirit and not transgender.
His novel, Jonny Appleseed, was published in 2018, when he was also a finalist for the Dayne Ogilvie Prize for Canadian LGBTQ writers, eventually winning a Lambda Literary Award for Gay Fiction and the 2021 Canada Reads competition. In 2022 he released a work of non-fiction entitled Making Love with the Land.
Currently, he is an Associate Professor of Indigenous Studies and English at the University of Calgary on Treaty 7 Territory.
