A Salvadoran-American filmmaker, model, actor, and #Intersex right activist, they are best known for their short film from 2019, #Ponyboi, the first film to feature an openly intersex actor playing an intersex person. Born and raised in New Jersey, Gallo didn’t know they were intersex until they were 12 when they were told by their doctor that they would begin hormone therapy and have surgery to insert prosthetic testicles when they were 16. This practice of cosmetic surgery done to minors who are intersex is something Gallo has spoken up openly against, stating that they are not old enough to give informed consent when they likely do not even realize they are intersex (like was done to Gallo).
After studying acting at NYU, they graduated with their bachelor’s degree, followed by a master’s degree from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts. This was a springboard for their short film, Ponyboi, which Gallo both co-directed and starred in. The film was screened at the Tribeca Film Festival and BFI Flare: London LGBT Film Festival.
In 2019, Gallo won the GLAAD Rising Star Grant, which has been used to mentor LGBTQIA+ students in Los Angeles public schools. In 2020, Gallo starred in an episode of Love, Victor, as one of the character’s LGBT roommates.
