Amelio Robles Ávila

Amelio Robles Ávila (November 3rd, 1889 – December 9, 1984): Raised the child of a wealthy rancher in Mexico, Amelio always shared a love of horseback riding and handling weapons, having been a skilled marksman and rider. Assigned female at birth, Amelio dressed in stereotypically male clothing and joined the army in 1911 or 1912, and from that moment on demanded to be treated with the same rights and privileges that men enjoyed at that time. Working his way up in the military, he was even given his own command as “el coronel Robles.” He worked alongside prominent Mexican political figures through a turbulent time in Mexico’s history, later entering the Confederation of Veterans of the Revolution, it having been confirmed that he received six bullet wounds. It has been recorded that if anyone dead-named Amelio or used feminine pronouns around him, he would threaten them with a pistol. #LGBTQIA #PrideMonth #YouCannotEraseUs
